A large pot of pâte, finely ground cornmeal mixed with water, cooks over a wood fire. Many families in our community use wood or locally made charcoal to cook. Using a gas stove (like we do in our house) is much less common. A basketball sized bag of charcoal costs 200 cfa ($0.40) and can be used to cook several meals. A canister of gas costs 11,000 cfa ($22) and lasts me and Jen three to four months.
